Captain Masterson retired from the Armed Forces eleven years ago when peace had waned for several years following the Fifth Great Defensive against the invading Riventak. Having been a victim of the Confederacy’s cutbacks into the high-cost military, Masterson has been commanding the corporate starship Indestructible ever since. His first four years as a civilian were exciting as he led the Indestructible and its civlian crew against pirates in defense of unarmed cargo haulers. He and his ship even became somewhat famous for its success against the dirges of space.

But the last seven years have proven to be quiet and have worn down his bravado. Masterson was not getting any younger—this fact becomes all too real when he discovers that his employer, Hoplite Interstellar Technologies, is secretly fleecing its retired workers of their pensions and savings accounts. So Masterson decides to take his future into his own hands and he attempts to steal his own vessel from Hoplite in order to plunder the company’s other facilities and ships. Masterson will have to secretly plan and plot against his employer, contend with pirates, mercenaries, authorities, and the just plain bad luck that chance throws his way. Will he be able to pull off such a dangerous and daring scheme without getting his friends hurt in the process?
